Kiruru Copper Smelting Project

Project Over View

At present, Tanzania’s copper industry is still in its early stages of development, with the majority of metallic copper being imported or recycled from scrap and internal returns. This includes non-ferrous metals like copper, aluminum, lead, and zinc.

However, Lunar Mines Africa (LMA) Cooper Projects is aiming to change the status quo by processing primary and secondary copper ores into high-purity copper ingots. The conversion of mineral ores into downstream value chain is considered to be amongst the most important stages for takeoff to industrialization.

Through the advanced copper pilot pit furnace, LMA has successfully converted copper ore into copper ingots with a purity of 90-97%. The project was conducted in KIRURU, a copper pilot project located in the Kilimanjaro region.

[LMA] is projected to have an annual copper ore production capacity of 570 metric tons per month, resulting in 25-ton ingots of 96% purity per month when at 100% capacity utilization. The first year of operation will begin at 80% capacity utilization, gradually increasing to 85% in year two, 90% in year three, and finally stabilizing at 95% capacity utilization in year four and beyond. These increases will be the direct result of improved skills, expertise, experience, and market share.

[LMA] intends to manufacture 96% pure copper ingots for use in various products such as electrical wire, cooking utensils, pipes, automobile radiators, brass, and bronze. In the future, the company plans to expand its metallurgical operations further by establishing an electrolytic plant to produce cathode high-purity copper at 99.99% copper, meeting world standards for global competitiveness in the market.
